Artist Statement

 

Port Adelaide has always been more than a location to me—it has been part of my life.

As a child growing up nearby, I spent weekends there with my family. My parents shopped in the Port, we fished from its wharves, explored its laneways and rode our bikes through streets rich with history. Long before I became a photographer, Port Adelaide had already become part of who I was.

Nearly thirty years later, I returned with a camera to create Portraits of Port Adelaide. My goal was to record the people whose lives, work and personalities define this remarkable place. Every portrait became a conversation, every location another reminder of the Port I had known since childhood.

The final image is a self-portrait, not as a photographer standing outside the story, but as someone whose own history is intertwined with it. Built as a composite using fragments of Port Adelaide’s architecture and industrial landscape, it reflects both the place that inspired the series and the lifelong connection that inspired me to create it.
